Piccini Chianti 2008

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Vintage: 2008
Type: Chianti
Country: Italy – Tuscany

This wine was quite pleasant, though it lacked a bit of structure. Too acidic to start, it mellowed out after an hour or so. Afterwards, it was a easy pleasurable drink.

Conan the Barbera – Barbera D’Asti 2007

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Vintage: 2007
Type: Barbera d’Asti
Country: Italy – Piedmont

I purchased this wine after reading a good review of it a couple of months ago. The label, especially the back was quite humorous and jolly — typically a warning for a mediocre bottle. Of course this wasn’t the case.

I decanted the wine around midday and at the time it was closed up tight, so I left it to rest until the evening. One thing to note is that the cork on the bottle was very serious (which is great as this wine will benefit from laying down for a number of years).

In the evening, I poured a glass and began to explore. The colour was incredibly dark, almost opaque. On the nose it was full of berries with a bit of earth on the side. On the tongue it is a true pleasure of tannic acidity (your mouth waters as you taste) filled with vivid fruit flavours. It’s full bodied and serious, so it may not be to everyone’s palette.

Given the acidity and the quality of the bottling, this wine will happily sit for many years. You can find the wine here: www.findwine.co.uk

Salice Salentino Il Tauro Riserva 2005

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Vintage: 2005
Type: Negroamaro
Country: Italy – Puglia

This wine had a great deep red colour with slight fading at the edge.  Smells of oak on the nose with great berry flavours and a long smoky finish.  Drinking well at the moment.

2004 Valiano Chianti Classico Il Poggio

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Vintage: 2004
Type: Sangiovese Blend
Country: Italy – Tuscany

This Chianti is quite nice. Better than most Chiantis that you can find outside of Italy (they tend to keep the good stuff) it is light and refreshing with a great nose and flavours.

Il Faggio Montepulciano D’Abruzzo

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Vintage: 2008
Type: Montepulciano
Country: Italy

We found this wine at a gastro pub near Earl’s Court. It was quite delicious with dark berries and coffee on the nose and chocolate and dark cherry on the palette.

Ricossa – Barbaresco

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Vintage: 2005
Type: Barbareesco
Country: Italy

The Barbaresco from Ricossa is an excellent, strong Italian wine. The Barbarescos tend to be a little lighter than their Barolo cousins and tend to mature quicker as well. This one is a fine example with dark cherry aroma and a great finish.

Ricossa-Barbera D’Asti

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Vintage: 2007
Type: Barbera D’Asti
Country: Italy

Of all of the Ricossa that I tatsed at the Tesco Wine fair this year, the Barbera D’Asti was the one that I enjoyed the most. Again a strong bold wine with Dark Cherries and plum on the palate. The aroma is oak with a strong earthy smell. The wine is also acidic, but not to the point of detracting from its taste.

Ricossa – Barolo

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Vintage: 2004
Type: Barolo
Country: Italy

If you’ve ever had a Barolo before, you will know that this is a full bodied wine that goes great with meat. The Ricossa Barolo is no different with a big bold flavour with plummy aromas.

Madregale

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Vintage: 2007
Type: Rosso
Country: Italy

This was a free bottle of wine that was given to me by a local butcher. It is an OK drinking wine, as expected. Nothing special, but if you can find it cheap then go for it.

Borgogno

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Vintage: 2001
Type: Barolo
Country: Italy

An excellent strong Barolo. Great colour and fragrance, quite a bold flavour. Perfect with a steak (I wouldn’t drink this on itself).
