Freie Weingärtner Wachau / Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Weingärten Weißenkirchen 2009

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Vintage: 2009
Type: Grüner Veltliner
Country: Austria – Wachau

I am BIG fan of this Austrian grape variety, so anything beyond this sentence will be biased. Achtung … hier ist Herbalicious!!

On the nose, this Gruner Veltliner has notes of grapefruit and ripe apple but after you have swirled it around your mouth, you realise that this is actually pretty herbal (with a decent, elegant finish).

Perhaps not my favourite Gruner Veltliner but this is what I would drink to re-energise myself after a depressing day at work. If I were still living in Vienna, I would be drinking this wine to accompany my deliciously, shallow-fried Schnitzel and Sauerkraut. However, because I live in London where I have to make Schnitzels by hand (and it’s a lot of work!), I drink this wine with slightly spiced food, such as a Thai stir fry or home-made gyros/kebab.

Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner 2009

Vintage: 2009
Type: Grüner Veltliner
Country: Austria

This is a bottle we picked up from Waitrose because I was having a craving for Austrian wine. This wine is both peppery and zingy, as Gruener Veltliners should be. There are aromas of apple / pear and the taste is well-balanced.

This wine would go well with a refreshing salad and a slightly spiced seafood stir fry.

Note that this wine was chosen to accompany Wiener Schnitzel on BBC Breakfast, which aired on 11 June 2011. The chefs  described it as “buttery and acidic”.

Franz Hirtzberger – Grüner Veltliner

Vintage: 2008
Type: Grüner Veltliner
Country: Austria

This is a medium to full-bodied white wine, that offers the drinker hints of both honey and pepper / spice. This would go very well with pan-Asian foods and probably best with Thai and Vietnamese dishes.
