Some Young Punks Battle Island 2009

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Vintage: 2009
Type: Shiraz Cabernet
Country: Australia – South Australia

Nice full bodied Shiraz Cabernet from Australia, displaying typical characteristics from an Aussie Shiraz – big bold fruit and high alcohol content. The tannins are still quite young and strong in the wine, which hints that it will stand up to a bit of ageing. Full flavours of cranberry and blackcurrant with hints of pepper and spice.

Domaine de la Madone Fleurie Cuvée Tradition 2009

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Vintage: 2009
Type: Beaujolais
Country: France – Beaujolais – Fleurie

This is a lovely Beaujolais with an excellent flavour full of fruit. Nice acidity and easy to drink. Tonnes of fruit on the palette – almost bursting with flavour.  Nice hints of minerality as well.

Joseph Gruss & Fils Crémant d’Alsace Rosé 2009

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

Vintage: 2009
Type: Rosé Crémant
Country: Alsace – Eguisheim

Yummy, yum, yum. All French sparkling wine that comes from outside of the Champagne region is classified Cremant but the flavours and bubbles you’ll find in this bottle may deceive your senses to think otherwise. I am biased towards this vineyard and its products because I secretly admire Andre. Regardless of the bias, the Cremant stands out splendidly in its own right.

Georges Dubœuf Saint-Amour 2009

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Vintage: 2009
Type: Beaujolais
Country: France – Beaujolais – Saint-Amour

This wine is an excellent value-for-money Beaujolais. From one of the larger producers in Beaujolais, there is a reason why Georges Dubœuf is so popular. Good marketing and a consistent reliable wine.

Full of fruit flavours, this wine is evokes joy and ease and is a fun wine that shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Lots of flower scents on the nose and a nice light ruby colour. Much more frivolity in this wine compared to the 2009 Juliénas

Georges Dubœuf Juliénas 2009

Château de la Grave Hommage 2009

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Vintage: 2009
Type: Rosé Blend
Country: France – Bordeaux – Côtes de Bourg

This is a very special rose wine. It looks like a rose but acts like a red. On the nose, it has very intense fruity flavours (strawberry-like) but on the palate, it tastes of light spices and subtle oak.

I think this wine would fit in at an al fresco late lunch or early dinner of tapas or a variety of roasted veggies, pitas and dips. Delicious! I hope you find this wine as pleasantly surprising as I did!

Château Monconseil Gazin Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Vintage: 2009
Type: Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend
Country: France – Bordeaux – Côtes de Blaye

We visited the Baudet’s vineyard this past summer and sampled a good selection of white and red wines in their large cellar. This wine is quite full bodied with citrus overtones and oak flavours. This is certainly not your new world Sauvignon Blanc (but then again, there is the Semillon in there!).  This could go well with a seafood dinner … maybe even escargots.

Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner 2009

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Vintage: 2009
Type: Grüner Veltliner
Country: Austria

This is a bottle we picked up from Waitrose because I was having a craving for Austrian wine. This wine is both peppery and zingy, as Gruener Veltliners should be. There are aromas of apple / pear and the taste is well-balanced.

This wine would go well with a refreshing salad and a slightly spiced seafood stir fry.

Note that this wine was chosen to accompany Wiener Schnitzel on BBC Breakfast, which aired on 11 June 2011. The chefs  described it as “buttery and acidic”.
