2008 Merlot by Franciscan Estate Napa Valley

Monday, January 28th, 2013

Vintage: 2008
Type: Merlot
Country: USA — California — Napa Valley

2008 Merlot by Franciscan Estate in Napa Valley

This is a bottle  of wine I picked up at a local grocery store in San Diego. I paired it with leftover pizza but I think this wine deserves much more! It deserves to accompany a proper slow-cooked Sunday meal. It would certainly develop nicely in your glass over an evening of good conversation. This is a very good wine from Napa Valley that reminds me of some wines I have tasted on the Right Bank of Bordeaux.

Technical Review

Appearance
Clear, deep garnet.

Nose
Clean, pronounced aromas of cherry, ripe strawberry and plum. A subtle herbal note.

Palate
Dry, high acidity, light tannins, medium body. Medium alcohol.
Flavour characteristics similar to the nose but with a smooth vanilla feel. Long finish.

Conclusion
Very good with potential for ageing. High priced (approximately USD$20) per bottle.

Ocean’s Ridge Pinot Noir 2008

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Vintage: 2008
Type: Pinot Noir
Country: New Zealand – Marlborough

This was a gift presented by friends from New Zealand and Australia. New Zealand is a region that has Pinot Noirs rivalling those of Burgundy … this one lives up to the reputation. It is a light, lively, fruity red wine that goes well with summer dinners. It is 13% alcohol and easy to drink quickly, so slow down and savour it with your food. This wine was paired with Italian roasted tomato sausages and mushroom tortellini in a creamy basil sauce.

Technical Review

Appearance
Clear, pale Ruby.
Nose
Clean, medium. Characteristics of strawberries and cherry. Some sweet spice, such as Cinnamon.

Palate
Medium acidity. Low tannin. Flavours of red fruit, although not complex. Medium body. Medium length finish.
Conclusion
Very good.

Warburn Estate Shiraz Yarrunga Field Black Label 2008

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Vintage: 2008
Type: Shiraz
Country: Australia – Barossa

This wine has nice oak hints with black fruit, chocolate, vanilla and tobacco. Still quite dark, almost purple colour. Good effort.

Francis Coppola – Niebaum-Coppola Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Collection Ivory Label 2008

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Vintage: 2008
Type: Cabernet Sauvignon
Country: USA – California

The wine has a deep cerise colour. Intriguingly complex fruit and spice. Unfortunately, this is tedious to drink due to a cheapish and persistent sweet/sour, ripe fruit/vinegar theme.  Not enjoyable at all.

Joseph Gruss & Fils Pinot Gris Pfersigberg Grand Cru 2008

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

Vintage: 2008
Type: Pinot Gris
Country: France – Alsace – Eguisheim (Pfersigberg)

Did you know that the name for this particular wine comes from the German word for peach?

Inhale the scent deeply and you will sense floral hints. There is good balance here between sweetness and acidity. You’ll note some honey and citrus notes. This is a very nice Pinot Gris overall.

Fine for drinking on its own on a warm day or with aromatic oriental curries.

Fonseca Porto Vintage Quinta do Panascal 2008

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

Vintage: 2008
Type: Port – Single Quinta Port (semi-Vintage)
Country: Portugal – Douro

Blackcurrant fruit with a nice spiciness and some prune richness. The palate is thick & spicy with rich blackcurrant and blackberry fruit and good tannins. A superb port.

Berry Bros. & Rudd Berry’s Own Selection – Pomerol 2008

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Vintage: 2008
Type: Bordeaux Blend
Country: France – Bordeaux – Pomerol

This wine was tasted during a tasting of Bordeaux over the holidays covering two wines from the Right and Left Banks.  This wine was the pick of the evening, full berries and hints of cassis, smooth velvety tannins with an long elegant finish.   Drink now, with a bit of decanting or for another few years.

Berry Bros. & Rudd Berry’s Own Selection – St. Émilion 2008

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Vintage: 2008
Type: Bordeaux Blend
Country: France – Bordeaux – St. Émilion

This wine was tasted during a tasting of Bordeaux over the holidays covering two wines from the Right and Left Banks.  I found this wine not quite as nice as the Pomerol or the Pauillac, though it was still excellent, well worked tannins and a classic earthy Bordeaux finish.  This wine will happily age for a few more years.

Berry Bros. & Rudd Berry’s Own Selection – Pauillac 2008

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Vintage: 2008
Type: Bordeaux Blend
Country: France – Bordeaux – Pauillac

This wine was tasted during a tasting of Bordeaux over the holidays covering two wines from the Right and Left Banks.  This was one of my favourites, full of blackcurrants and with a long finish.  Very good value-for-money Pauillac.

Las Corazas Vino de la Tierra de Castilla 2008

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Vintage: 2008
Type: Tempranillo
Country: Spain – Castilla-La Mancha

This wine is a classic Spanish Tempranillo. The colour of the wine is dark red with no fading on the edges. On the nose there is vanilla. There are hints of oak on the pallet and a lot of blackcurrant and red berries.

Overall this wine is easy to drink and quite inexpensive. Good value for money.
