Chateau Monconseil Gazin 2005

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Vintage: 2005
Type: Bordeaux Blend
Country: France – Bordeaux – Blaye

This is a very nice wine originating from the right side of the Gironde in Blaye, Bordeaux. 2005 was an exceptional year in the region, so any winemaker could have made a good wine (or so winemaker, Vincent Rousselle, tells me) because the fruits were fantastic in that vintage.  Drink this with a reasonably meaty meal, such as calves liver with lardons  or duck breast with an orange jus sauce.

Technical Analysis:

Appearance: Clear, deep Ruby.

Nose: Clean, medium intensity, aromas of red fruits (cherry), vanilla and oak.

Palate: High acidity, medium tannin, flavour characteristics of cherry, sweet spice, butter (possibly due to malolactic fermentation). Long finish.

Conclusion: Very good.

Michel Sarrazin et Fils – 1re Cru 2005

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

Vintage: 2005
Type: Pinot Noir
Country: France-Burgundy-Givry

This wine comes from a good lineage: it is classified as a Premier Cru from one of the Grands Vins de Bourgogne (a particular, quality plot of land). I had the pleasure of trying the last bit at the end of the work day. This is a very easy drinking wine that would complement a light, spring or autumnal dinner.

Technical Analysis

Appearance:  Clear, medium Ruby.

Nose: Medium and clean. Characteristics of red fruits such as strawberries and cherries. Hints of oak and vanilla. Some earthiness and truffle-like aromas.

Palate: High acidity, medium tannin. Flavour characteristics of red fruits and oak. Medium finish.

Conclusion: Very good.

Château Lers Loumede 2005

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Vintage: 2005
Type: Bordeaux Blend
Country: France – Bordeaux – Côtes de Blaye

There is a deep garnet colour in the wine and strong legs – for a Bordeaux but typical for the vintage. On the nose are strong berries with a bit of oak along with hints of almond.

The pallet is full of robust flavours of blackcurrant and strong tannins that still need some time to integrate into the wine. Quite nice and should age well for a few more years.

Hamm Winkeler Dachsberg Riesling Spätlese Dry 2005

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Vintage: 2005
Type: Riesling
Country: Germany

This German wine has good minerality and is quite dry. It wasn’t my cup of tea but I recognise that it is a good wine. On the nose there is a hint of citrus. It is easy to drink (especially as an accompaniment to oriental food).

Château Marquis de Vauban La Cuvée du Roy 2005

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Vintage: 2005
Type: Bordeaux Blend
Country: France – Bordeaux – Côtes de Blaye

The wine has a deep red colour throughout the glass. The tannins are well integrated, if a bit young. On the pallet there is a rush of berries, cassis and blackcurrant, quite bold for a Bordeaux. The finish is long and sumptuous. The wine is still quite young and will happily age for another 5-10 years.

75% Merlot 25% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Meerlust Rubicon 2005

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Vintage: 2005
Type: Bordeaux style blend
Country: South Africa

This wine is still quite young and brutish. Heavy unbalanced oak with blasts of fruit and spice. Intense nose, still smells young. The flavours did start to level off after a few hours of decanting, so I am hopeful that this wine will benefit from a few more years in the cellar.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Merlot Blend

Château Bellevue Gazin 2005

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Vintage: Non vintage
Type: Champagne
Country: France – Bordeaux – Côtes de Blaye

This wine is spectacular. Rich, bold flavours of dark berries with earthy mineral undertones. The nose is full with hints of oak and the colour is a deep ruby red. It is drinking very well at the moment but will keep for another 10 years or more if it’s stored properly. A high class wine that won’t break the bank.

Salice Salentino Il Tauro Riserva 2005

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Vintage: 2005
Type: Negroamaro
Country: Italy – Puglia

This wine had a great deep red colour with slight fading at the edge.  Smells of oak on the nose with great berry flavours and a long smoky finish.  Drinking well at the moment.

Montevina Zinfandel Terra d’Oro 2005

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Vintage: 2005
Type: Zinfandel
Country: California

We tried this wine the other evening expecting a light and refreshing red, which is typical of American Zinfandel. Boy were we wrong. The wine took a while to open up – the first taste was closed and very tannic. Once we let it air for an hour or two the wine really came into it’s own. Great full cherry flavours and a nice hint of smoke. The colour was a deep red with little fading at the edge.  The finish was medium length and nice and smooth.  A great effort from the Americans!
