Il Papavero

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Vintage: Non Vintage
Type: Primitivo
Country: Italy – Vino da Tavola

Given the reviews I have read about this wine, I was expecting more. Overall not a great wine at all, though it is pretty cheap (You can have it for around £5 a bottle). It has won a bronze award from the Dallas Morning News Wine Competition, but is that really saying much?

Las Casas

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Vintage: 2007
Type: Cabernet Sauvignon
Country: Chile – Maule Valley

I liked this wine, though I suspect that it needs a bit more age on it before it really shows what it can do. It will certainly need a while to breath if you try it now. You can find more about it here

Willy Willy

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Vintage: 2007
Type: Shiraz
Country: Australia – New South Wales

An OK wine, that I expected more from it, but perhaps the 2006 vintage was better. Good Shiraz, not great. You can find more about it here

Gran Tarapacá

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Vintage: 2004
Type: Cabernet Sauvignon
Country: Chilie – Maipo Valley

I Liked this wine. It was easy to drink and it had an excellent flavour and bouquet. You can order it here

Taylors – Quinta de Vargellas

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Vintage: 1988
Type: Special Vintage Port
Country: Portugal

An excellent special occasion vintage port. It needs to be decanted, but as long as you are careful it is a breeze. Unless you spend a lot of money for a true vintage port, this is the best port that you can buy (and it can be found relatively easy.)

Wolf Blass – Yellow Label

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Vintage: 2001
Type: Cabernet Sauvignon
Country: South Australia

An excellent Cab Sav with a full robust flavour. One of my value-for-money favourites.

Walker’s Pass

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Vintage: ?
Type: Old Vine Zinfandel
Country: California – US

As I find with most Zinfandels, they are a little disappointing. This one is certainty not one of the better ones.

Vina Mara

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Vintage: 2003
Type: Rioja
Country: Spain

I enjoyed this wine, but Rioja is not a favourite type for me, thus I don’t really have a good base to compare this one. A nice change, with good flavour.

Palacio de la Vega

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Vintage: 1999
Type: Cabernet Sauvignon
Country: Navarra – Spain

A good wine. Nice undertones of fruit (blackcurrent?) with an enjoyable bright flavour.
